Dirty Feet
The last thing I do before I crawl into bed at the end of each day is wash my feet. After walking red dirt paths and roads all day long, my feet end up extremely dirty. There are days though, when I am tempted to skip the foot washing because they don't all seem that dirty to me. However, I always find that when I wash the first foot and compare it to the unwashed foot, it instantly reveals clearly to me how very filthy my feet actually were even though I initially thought that they were relatively clean.
This foot illustration reminds me of how we can often view the dirt of our sinfulness. It's so easy to compare our dirty feet (the sin in our lives) to those around us, and to feel as though our feet don't look that bad. We can be tempted to skip the regular washing of time in God's Word and prayer, thinking that our "feet are clean". It's not until we compare our sin to the clean and spotless purity of Christ that we see just how sinful we really are and just how much we need that daily "foot washing". Just as I know that I need to wash my feet every single night, we all need to get out our basin each day and wash ourselves in the living water so that we can continue forward and start fresh with clean feet as we spend time with the Lord and receive His forgiveness and grace, and the power to do all that He's called us to do each and every day.
