Building the House of God
Since I moved to Kampala, I have been attending Rock Ministries Church. The church is led by Bishop Peter and his wife, Rose. This couple is the epidemy of servant leadership. They put their time and money into making sure the church and Kitetikka Primary School are running well. They spend most nights at church praying with someone or leading a bible study. Like most pastors in Uganda they are not paid by the church and have other jobs.
Our church congregation is made of all sorts of people with different backgrounds and just a church should we all come together into one body to serve each other. Many of our church members are single mothers trying to provide for their families, others are single guys who are working hard for little pay to help their family. So while everyone gives what they are able our tithes and offerings do not overfill the baskets which means that it is hard to make repairs when needed. One area that has needed replacing was our floors. We have concreate floors but over time they have cracked and chipped making it hard to mop the floors. We decided to begin raising money to replace the floors with tile, which will stay much better. After meeting with a builder we were told it would cost $3,000 to replace our floors. That was a huge number for us to try and reach, knowing that our weekly tithes are more like $25 or $30. So we began planning how we could reach our goal and the idea of a dinner was proposed.
We decided to invite people for a Gala dinner with music and entertainment to help raise money. Caitlyn and I were put in charge of the dinner. After weeks of planning and preparations we were ready. It was a lovely night, we had beautiful decorations and delicious food. We had an auction as well as several games and we raised $1,800!!! I couldn’t believe it, to see these people come together and donate to help our church was a beautiful thing. We also invited our international friends to “attend virtually” and raised another $500 from donations! We were able to buy the tiles and have them installed just in time for the new year! What a joy to look at the new floors and see Gods faithfulness to his people!
