Uganda Coronavirus Update

Uganda has officially joined the world in the fight against Covid 19. Last Wednesday we had no confirmed cases but the President began taking precautions, he first cancelled all schools and church for thirty days. Then Sunday we had our first confirmed case and the President closed the airport and all borders. By Wednesday we were up to fifteen cases and now all public transport and open markets were closed down. They also said that no more than three people can be in a car at one time. i attached a picture of the main taxi park in Kampala, normally it is filled with taxis and people. however today its looking a little different!

I honestly don’t know how I’m feeling about it all. Many Americans left or are still working with the embassy to get out. I am confident in my decision to stay here with my husband, but I still fear what will happen if coronavirus becomes as wide spread here as it is in other countries. We do not have the health system to support that. I also fear the safety as people are not working and will begin stealing to have enough for food. I fear the lies that are spreading causing people to verbally and physically attack foreigners because they are being told by others that we brought the virus here.

But then I combat that fear with the truth that I know and not what I feel; God was in control before this virus and He is still in control. I had no problem trusting Him as I moved to Uganda, learned how to live here and I saw Him work in my life. I still trust Him because I know that He still cares, He is still working and He has a plan when we can’t fathom the plan. I have been clinging to Psalm 91 over the past week. It begins “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” and ends “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

I am taking Gods promise that He will answer me when I call, He will protect me, and He will rescue me.

We are still waiting on Herbart’s spousal visa but we are praying that God will use this time of waiting to show us that He is bigger than immigration. We are praying that God will bring us back to the United States by the end of June so that Herbart will be able to meet everyone who has supported and prayed for us.

Love, Jessica
